Francesco Scarlatti

Postdoc Knockout

As a researcher in the Affective Brains lab, I work on the SpectrO project, where my research focuses on investigating the role of the opioid system in shaping individual differences in brain function, cognition and behaviour.

During my PhD, I studied the comorbidity between chronic pain and affective disorders by integrating large-scale neuroimaging and psychosocial data. My doctoral training was part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Joint Doctorate, involving institutes across nine countries and collaboration with leading experts in chronic pain and affective disorders. I conducted my research between the University of Heidelberg and the University of Strasbourg, under the supervision of Prof. Herta Flor and Prof. Jack Foucher.

During my PhD, I learned to see the brain as a complex, dynamic system: in ten years, you will be a different person interacting with a different world in a different way. What I find fascinating is how functional brain systems give rise to adaptive cognition and behaviour. How do deviations in these systems contribute to vulnerability to psychiatric disorders?
